Home Invasion: Tara

The Home Invasion series of photo sets is something I came up with as a creative exercise for myself. Normally when shooting someone, there is a great deal of pre-discussion, pre-planning, and shot selection. This is fantastic, and how most photography should probably be done. But I wanted to try something different. I wanted to show up in people’s homes and shoot them with whatever I find there, from set to wardrobe. The idea is to create on the fly, to assess, to be spontaneous with your creativity. So I convince people to invite me into their homes and I do exactly that. No lighting equipment. Just a Sony A7R II and a bag of lenses.

My home invasion shoot with Tara was more or less an accident. We have shot before, and had often discussed shooting again. We picked out a date and the style of studio shots we wanted to do. It was going to be a lighting tutorial for this website, and some stunning of images of a beautiful woman. But an electrical problem at the studio had shut down the heaters long enough that it became far too cold in there to shoot on the day we had picked. And so we had to cancel at the last minute.

Cleo is the greatest. If you are immediately confused, Cleo is my friend and frequent photography subject Mackenzie’s adorable pet cat. See, everyone knows me as a crazy cat man of sorts. However my kitties won’t wear clothes or collars whatsoever. Cleo? That little nugget wears bows and collars with the best of them. Such a friendly beast, she was ready and willing to ham it up for the camera during my latest Home Invasion.

I met Heidi at an intersection in downtown Hamilton Ontario about a decade ago. She didn’t know it then, but we would eventually become good friends many years later. She herself an aspiring photographer (with a very keen eye I might say), Heidi was one of the first persons I thought of when it comes to the Home Invasion series of photo sets. As scheduling would have it, she is in fact the first person to participate in this creative exercise with me. This past Sunday I packed my bags and headed to her home.
